ok, i'm confused about hresume
experience is a vevent
yes
class="experience vevent"
but job title is a vcard that is a child of the experience?
http://microformats.org/wiki/hresume#Experience
isn't clear about this
what exactly is the question?
you will need a vcard for each position
an hCard even ;)
the first hCard descendant inside the experience hCalendar event
then there should be specific class for it. like class="position vcard"
why?
you want to know what was the company and what was the job?
how do I know I'm not grabbing the vcard for the location of the company?
a company wouldn't have a job title
fn !== org
mkaply, simply grab the *first* hCard inside the experience
tantek: I can't. That might be the hcard of the company, not the hcard of the person and their position
there is no separate hCard of the company
tantek: there can be in the vevent location
the hCard of the person/position includes the org name etc. of the company
So are you saying that in an hresume, it is mandatory that the location in the experience vevent be a vcard?
it makes the most sense that if i work for XYZ company, i would just have ONE hCard for my position in ORG=XYZ
i'm not saying that at all - actually the contrary, that it is unlikely that locations of experience events will have hCards themselves
what brian said too
not an hCard for my position and a seperate one for the company
right
plus, location is often disjoint from an experience event
i.e. you might have several different offices over the course of a single job
interesting
<DIV class="experience vevent vcard">
and moving offices often has *nothing* to do with your job
and is not something people normally publish in their resume
is that invalid?
thus the precise "location" of a job experience is not really that important
or certainly, it is not typically published
whereas people do publish their business-card-like info within a job experience entry
mkaply, speaking of hResume
did you see Erin's email re: Operator/hResume?
yes. That's actually what we're talking about here
He actually uses
what is Operator doing with the hResume here: http://erincaton.ca/resume.html
<DIV class="experience vevent vcard">
she btw
sorry :)
which violates everything we just talked about :)
np
as has been pointed out in hcard-faq and hcard-issues, we need to figure out a way of representing gender in hCard for folks that wish to self-publish that info
I could have at least seen the picture on the page :)
so is that valid?
i'd say yes (the class stuff)
can you have two microformats on the same DOM node?
so then tantek's comment about first descendant doesn't hold true in this case
you could also make that an hAtom entry too
mkaply, yes, two microformats can use the same DOM node (though obviously it takes some very careful markup)
but let's check the spec
re: descendant
and people wonder why I have trouble parsing this stuff.
mkaply: "experience. optional. One or more hcalendar events with the class name 'experience', with an embedded hCard indicating the job title, name of company, address of company etc."
note *embedded* hCard
what is the use with Erin's site?
that could be more precise, but embedding typically implies *inside*, not *overlayed*
that's from http://microformats.org/wiki/hresume
so there was a fix needed to my hresume. To call out the vcard that is a child of experience. But it won't fix her resume obviously
what is wrong with her resume?
<DIV class="experience vevent vcard">
well, there is another issue with her class="include" as well
what is the issue with having that class="experience vevent vcard"? are you trying to associate a vcard to a vevent?
a vevent does knows nothing about positions, etc.
briansuda: we just established that the spec says that the vcard is embedded.
And if the vcard could be either the same as the experience or a child of the experience would be a little painful to parse
ok, a lot painful to parse
but what are you attempting to do?
you only ever extract VCARDS or VEVENTS and the data they share is not relevant of vcard is nested or not
unless you are doing something different?

Well, I need a place to look for the vcard first so that I can extract the data. And I would look for it as a child of experience.
I don't grab the data in the vcard, I grab the vcard.
[[Special:Log/block]] http://microformats.org/wiki?title=Special:Log/block&diff=0&oldid=0 * Brian * (+0) blocked "User:UsxNq5" with an expiry time of infinite: bot spam/vandal
but what are you trying to do by connecting the vcard to a vevent?
if you want to find the vcard first, then just look for class="vcard"
a vcard is a vcard event if it isn't a child of experience
We're talking about two different things. there is accessing the vcards separately, which I already do.
right
Then there is the second case. Should you be able to go hResume->experience->vcard.title
sorry. Mixed metaphors there
hResume.experience.vcard.title
ok, now i think i understand abit more
the hresume will be a big JS structure. in the end.
but what about how we do fancy GEO stuff
you find an experience
if experience = vcard, then it is hResume.experience.title
look for a child of class="title"
then look UP the stack to see if that is a child of class="vcard"
parts of the vCard ARE embedded in the experience
but they should be embedded as children of a vcard, correct?
not nessicarily the WHOLE vcard, but part of it
That seems to be why Erin chose to make vcard and vevent the same thing. Because it seemed to her that they share data
yes, class="title" MUST be a child of class="vcard"
to me as well
i would even say that you could have vcard ABOVE class="vevent experience" and still be valid
we do something similar with GEO (stand alone)
it looks-up to see if it is a child of vcard/vevent and then goes down the DOM to find FN/SUMMARY
so you could do class="experience vevent" => class="title" (then look for parent of class="vcard")
if true, then use that value
this could be a VERY sneaky way to avoid using the include pattern
ONE single vCard that is the whole page
[[hcalendar-brainstorming-fr]] M http://microformats.org/wiki?title=hcalendar-brainstorming-fr&diff=0&oldid=15472 * Yp1Hsu * (-41736)
then multiple vcard positions for each experience
then as a vCard extractor you'd only get one vcard
but as an hResume parser, you could get one vcard, but multiple positions
does that make sense?
briansuda: Then you can write that hResume parser :)
(and people are so happy to push things past draft!)
You know one of the complaints about microformats is there is no consistent way to parse them.
Stuff like this doesn't really help the cause :)
i did start to write an hResume parser for HTML=>PDF
no you are right, microformats should be easy to write, but all the hardwork is on the parsers
but you can't make them so easy to write that the parsers are impossible.
I can write an RDFa parser in 50 liens
but how many people can write RDFa into their HTML
:)

intersting
<ABBR title="" class="dtend"/>
I don't like that
that gets stripped out by TIDY as well
So to be clear, all I'm changing at this point is that operator will look for a vcard that is a child of experience (this is based on the hresume spec)
And someone should tell Erin that her vcard needs to be a child of her experience (at least for now)
briansuda: do you genuinely believe in the future that all this stuff will continue to be written by hand?
no
i was talking to some smart folks over the weekend and we were chatting about interfaces to mark-up data as microformats
you highlight text, right click, tell the editor what it is "FN, ORG, ...." and it does all the code behind the senses
If the only complaint about RDFa is "it looks like crap and noone will ever code that in their HTML", that's not a very good argument :)
well, it has some depenances of @role which fix it to versions or invalid HTML
Go GRDDL!
and microformats use an attribute that was intended for presentation to express semantic info. Six of one, half dozen of the other :)
well, not really class is a general purpose attribute according to the W3C HTML spec
it is not an abuse to use class
briansuda: so I've been taking a poll. I need a word that describes microformats, rdfA, eRDF in one mouthful
semantics
so far, we've got "metadata" and "embedded data" and "embedded structure"
Yeah, I like semantic. I can come up with a real cool operator tagline. The symantec web...NOW!
sorry, semantic. Symantec web would be a web owned by an antivirus vendor

mkaply: congrats!
kingryan: ok, you're as good a person to ask as any. I'm trying to determine if a feature in Operator is a "geek" feature
not implying anything about you, just that you are of a microformats persuasion
Showing the number of microformats on the page in parenthesis after the item. vs. simply enabling/disabling
what do you mean by "simply enabling/disabling"?
kingryan: well, right now if there are no microformats, the button is disabled and it does not have (0) after it for isntance.
When I find microformats, I enable it and put (?)
ah
the current behavior is useful to me
I've changed it so the icons now properly enable/disable
The problem with it is that the toolbar shifts big time which is kind of jarring
I'm wondering if a regular user cares about the numbers
or should I make that a debug option
or maybe only display the numbers when you are in microformats mode, not "action mode"
(We've determined action mode is for non microformat folk)
why not just add some empty space between icons so that they don't shift?
I think the numbers are useful
but that's just me
btw, I use mfs mode, not action mode
yeah. So do I.
All the microformats folk use microformats mode. They care about the data, not what to do with the data
yeah, I already have ways to deal with the data via bookmarklets
I'm kind of scared of joining uf-new - is my fear unjustified?
grr - I totally have to
this whole month's discussion is about stuff I care about
fuck

ddfreyne is nothing
Have there been proposal for an interview microformat? i.e. a question/answer style dialogue microformat?
[[audio-info-examples]] http://microformats.org/wiki?title=audio-info-examples&diff=0&oldid=15490 * AlexandreVandeSande * (+620) Individual Publishing of Speech -
ddfreyne: there are examples for marking up conversations
http://microformats.org/wiki/chat-examples#Reported_Speech
for eg
not quite a microformat as it's all existing elements
I noticed a chatlog microformat, but interviews are quite different
how so?
http://yptsupport.blogspot.com/2006/05/ken-yeager-asks-albert-balagso-about.html
chatlogs are more like arbitrary messages, without clear distinction between question and answer…
interviews are more question-answer pairs
I'm thinking… <ol> for chat logs, <dl> for interviews
nah
abusing dl like that is not good
you could use the <li><cite><q> pattern
and have a class on the q for question and answer
I was using something like <dt>Interviewer: <q cite="Interviewer">Question?</q></dt>
which would let you style them differently
ddfreyne: do interviews all consist of Q/A pairs?
but that isn't a definition
kingryan: I'd say all of them do
not really
Hm, alright… dl is out
ddfreyne: I disagree. interviewers can make statements too
kingryan: true.
if you're interested in an interview microformat, I'd suggest looking at the chat and conversation stuff first.
A question can have multiple answers, and a answer can have multiple question anyway
yes
class="question" and class="answer" would be fine
kingryan: I've been following them, but I don't agree with everything
KevinMarks: agreed… that was what I had initially, in fact
then you can readily style it like common layouts (q's in bold, responses in plain)
ddfreyne: "not agreeing with everything" is not a good reason to propose a new format
kingryan: of course not… I'm merely building on what exists already
also that isn't a format yet
kingryan: the chat log microformat still is a work in progress anyway
mark yours up and add to http://microformats.org/wiki/chat-examples
will do

damn the spammers are moving IP addresses
they just moved from the carribean to somewhere in asia
I didn't know spammers had enough money for plane tickets. :)
if only they'd attach class="spam" to their posts...
yeah, we so need a microformat for spam indeed

same answer
I wanted people to see the example on page 217
of how confusing an experience with two vcards in it is
He doesn't say it is confusing, but when you look at it, it is a problem.
There's no way to distinguish between the vcard of the individual and the vcard of the organization
mkaply, perhaps you should create a microformats-book-issues page on the wiki
hmmm
i didn't get to page 217 yet.. looking ahead would be like cheating ;)
and link to it from http://microformats.org/wiki/books entry for the book
I'm still on my eariler question of how to distinguish different vcards in the experience. Incidentally, I realized why you can't have the experience be a vcard...
because then if the location for the experience vevent was a vcard, you'd have a vcard nested inside a vcard.
is this the authortative hcard problem again?
KevinMarks: no, this a little different. Currently in hresume, the vcard of the "experience" is simply the vcard in the experience.
It doesn't have a unique classname (like contact for instance)
So there is no way to know which vcard in the experience is the vcard of the experience, vs. vcard of the company. vs vcard of the location of the company in the vevent
hmmm the book site doesn't have the downloadable hresume example
mkaply, strictly speaking you could distinguish based on fn==org or not
unless the person worked for an individual :)
I'm still going to argue that there should be a classname for the vcard. In the same way we don't say "all vevents in the resume are experience" without labeling them experience
ah well. not the time for this dicussion. Jericho is on :)
quick scan of the page.. for those without the book... http://placenamehere.com/temp/ufbook_experience.pdf
