Or I'll ask for a press badge
it is still a ways off - maybe you can submit a proposal to present
I have to think about it.
Don't know if I can do a presentation at a major event like this
xtech06 wasn't all that big, it is not as scary as you think
I think you'll do the microformats speech won't you ?
no, i won free tickets as the prize at xtech06, so i don't have to prepare anything
the door is open for you or anyone else
I'm going to think about it. Doing pres in French is OK, but my English is a bit rusty

hey briansuda, i've got a bit of an esoteric question... i'm trying to emulate the feed service that technorati offers for transforming microformats to ics through your xslt fu. i'm trying the mod_rewrite route but the URI's aren
t getting passed properly
http://feeds.csuchico.edu/events/http://seaborn.csuchico.edu/~sjungling/mf/roomres.html
do you have a link?
mod_rewrite feels the need to drop one of the '/' from the URI
hmm.. what is your re-write rule?
RewriteRule ^(events/)(.*)$ /x2v/get-vcal.php?uri=$2 [QSA,L]
i don't know re-write that well, i'm not sure what the QSA,L does, but....
you might be able to do this in the REGEX
RewriteRule ^events/(http://)?(.*)$ /x2v/get-vcal.php?uri=http://$2 [QSA,L]
heh. http://http:/seaborn.csuchico.edu/~sjungling/mf/roomres.html
closer, but i see where you're going with this
i was hoping to avoid that for fear of complexity that might arise for needing to check/match against https as well
yeah, i'm not sure what the deal is with the // => /
yeah, has me stumped
you might try asking kingryan or tantek, one of them had to get it working for technorati's site
we do it in php
what method are you using in php?
yes, but how do you get the URL for the page to transform from the service URL?
$url_parts = explode('/', urldecode($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']));
$ping_url = join('/', array_slice($url_parts, 2));
i think i have a rewrite rule that handles those cases
RewriteRule ^(events)/(referer)$ /x2v/get-vcal.php?uri=%{HTTP_REFERER}
my problem is specific to when you pass an arbitrary URI which may not be the refering page
and while it's possible just to specify the query string a la '?uri=http://blah'... i'm intrigued by the Technorati solution which is a cleaner url
kingryan is ryan king
mlinksva is Mike Linksvayer and from Creative Commons
yeah, opening in new tab doesn't pass a referrer
hi kingryan, i was just chatting with brian about how technorati's microformat feed service handles URLs in queries, could you offer some insight?
what do you mean?
i'm trying to emulate the way technorati handles mf feeds for converting to ics,etc
http://feeds.csuchico.edu/events/http://seaborn.csuchico.edu/~sjungling/mf/roomres.html
i've tried this via mod_rewrite but i'm finding a weird bug where the URL isn't passed properly in the rewrite process (as it's removing a slash)
:D
in php we do substr($_SERVER['PATH_INFO'], 8)
using an apache handler
so, right now i have a rule of
RewriteRule ^(events/)(.*)$ /x2v/get-vcal.php?uri=$2 [QSA,L]
that should work
it should, but it's removing a slash in the http://
would %{PATH_INFO} be a better substitute?
maybe
we do it all in the php code so that we can do whatever cleanup neccesary
funny thing: the matching/replacement from the rule works perfectly in an editor like bbedit, but apache seems to be dropping the ball... or possibly doing some uri escaping fu
so you have a directory with an index.php file that basically grabs PATH_INFO and goes to town on parsing?
yes
we don't use multiviews, though
those were the 2 lines i posted
we explicitly map it with an apache handler
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/handler.html
ah, i understand what you were saying kevin
alright, i think i've got a good sense of what direction to go with this, thanks guys for your help
mod_rewrite is evil black magic
don't use it anymore :D
heh. double-edged sword
from the docs: "Despite the tons of examples and docs, mod_rewrite is voodoo. Damned cool voodoo, but still voodoo. ''
it's like jwz's rule iterated
you have a problem. You use mod_rewrite. now you have 3 problems, and one of them is a regex
and it can't even read mail... useless!
hmm, I bet you could get mod_rewrite to read mail
ah, but *could* doesn't imply *should* :-)
especially when dealing with voodoo...
mod_rewrite rocks
for the curious, i was able to get it to work with mod_rewrite and mixing the code kevinmarks suggested into briansuda's get-vcal script
cool
just replaced the bit of code that grabs GET['uri'] and grabbed SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] instead
and of course all the explode/join fu

hmm... I was about to bookmark this with delicious, but the PHPSESSID works against the social network effect. http://2007.sxsw.com/interactive/?PHPSESSID=62777a8ebbd7f4cf8ad72c7b1933d9b2

hmm... since telling flock about my delicous account, it has pegged the CPU
DanC, isn't there some TAG finding about not putting things like PHPSESSID into the URL?
well, webarch says "don't make aliases".
and we're working on a "metadata in uris" finding; it might be more specific about this idiom.
rather "don't make aliases without really good reasons"
I think flock is done syncing with delicious. I guess that was sort of a reasonable amount of time to take. But the attempt to do it "in the background" pretty much failed.
is this a new release, DanC?
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060915 Firefox/1.5.0.7 Flock/0.7.5.1
Sep 15 http://www.flock.com/node/7313
I had "back up delicious bookmarks" on my TODO list for a few months. Now it looks like flock will do it for me.
my latest entry is "Wishing for XOXO microformat support in OmniOutliner" , fyi. Does anybody here have a nice XOXO editor?
i.e. one that you use in real life?
BBEdit ;)
hmm... does it know how to skootch a whole bunch of items in/out a level?
I use emacs+nxml-mode when I'm willing to look at <>s
danja is Danny Ayers, http://dannyayers.com
DanC, actually, yes
you select the whole bunch of items
then you select Markup > Lists > Unordered List
and it puts your whole selection inside a one item unordered list
ok, that's "skootch in".
how about "skootch out"?
Ecto does it for <ol> but not <dl>
I maintain my GTD projects list using XOXO plus some of that css/js magic . But it's not direct-manipulation editing. I'm tempted to get out my XSLT hammer and do XOXO<->ooutline format
but... hmm... my projects.html has hyperlinks in some of the item; I wonder if OmniOutliner would chew them up and throw them away.
hmm... looks like there isn't a "remove" one chunk of tags command
probably have to write a BBEdit plugin to do that
http://webkit.org/projects/editing/index.html maybe
"Most importantly the WebKit editing engine is used to compose mail messages in Mail on Tiger." ooh! does that mean that I'll soon be able to make links while composing mail on a mac?
DanC: have you considered using markdown? that converts easily to xoxo
I like to use XHTML as the "truth" so that I can use direct manipulation tools, when they work, and fall back to a text editor when they don't.
But sometimes I do use another syntax as "the truth"; I use ReStructuredText in my python code, and I use N3 for RDF.
I suppose that for me "direct manipulation" = text editor
"direct manipulation" is sorta like wysywig.
well, with text files (using something like markdown) WYSIWYG
yes, that's true.
anyway, if you're using GTD you should consider trying one of the gtd bundles with textmate
but now we're digressing
I haven't taken the textmate plunge. I lead a cross-platform life, on purpose.
and I'm an emacs addict.
I'm only using GTD enough to be frustrated by it, really.
the main platform I use it on is a sidekick, really.
DanC: the GTD Emacs people I know all love Planner
http://www.plannerlove.com/
hober, nifty. But I'm not sure I want to strengthen my emacs addiction.
"i spent most of this past weekend reading the elisp manual because planner.el is sucking me in"
-- planner testamonials
:)
I think strengthening your Emacs addiction is a fantastic idea! :)
ooh... hyperlinks from TODO list items. I like it. (the sidekick doesn't support that, though. :-/)
